Essex Club Opening Day, Essex, NJ

May 2nd, 2010

We had our opening day tournament on May 2, 2010. It was a hot day and we had 7 members play a 4 against 3. In the first game the triples team of Duncan Farrell, Loraine Urquhart and Michele Arculli won handily. In the re-match, the game went down to a measure after the final bowl and the fours team of Debbie Smith, Brian Drozd, Catherine McKinnon and Colin Smith were victorious. We decided to play 1 end to determine the tournament winners and again it went down to the last bowl and Duncan's Team won.

We started our weekly Tuesday Night bowling on May 4th. Bob, Michele and Rainey beat Debbie, Brian and Colin.

We are planning on our First Open House on Sunday June 13, 2010. We hope these sessions will lead to an increase in our club's membership total.

The club ended its 2009 season with a Handicap Singles Tournament on October 31- November 1. Bowlers are divided into two groups, and each bowler was assigned a handicap depending on his or her experience. Jerry Egan and Bill Bryant won their groups, and in the finals Egan defeated Bryant 19-13. Jim Halter defeated Bob Hunt 14-13 to claim third place.

On January 28, 2010, our Club held its annual meeting and election of officers at a pot luck dinner the Port Anne Clubhouse. Social Chair Joan Miller planned the event which included musicians Sylvia Hunt, Roger Ferguson, and Martha Peterson performing before dinner. Awards for the past year's tournaments were presented, and the following officers were elected for 2010: President Ann Wuest, Vice-President Jack Edwards, Secretary Edith Edwards, and Treasurer Jim Halter. Jim also reported that the club ended the year with 64 members. A highlight of the evening was a roast of longtime bowler Bill Holcombe. Members recounted several amusing stories of Bill's prowess on and off the green.

The board has planned an active season for 2010 including two Northeast Division tournaments, the Miller Open Pairs on June 5-6 and the NED US Singles Playdowns on August 14-16. In addition, the popular Williamsburg Open Pairs will be held on October 30-31. The green opens formally to the public on April 1. Please visit our website at www.williamsburglawnbowling.org

Members of the New York Lawn Bowling Club are looking forward to the 2010 season, which will include a schedule of tournaments, open house clinics for new players, an outreach to teens, and social events. This year we are honored to be the host club for the Northeast Division's Hall of Fame Triples tournament on June 26 and 27. We will ensure that tournament players have access to the green for practice the day before.

As always, we welcome visiting USLBA members to bowl with us during our May through October season. Check the monthly calendar on our website, www.nybowls.com, for open dates and playing times. This year Joe Kelly will be leading our new Youth League Committee, which will introduce local teens to lawn bowling. Also, two popular instructional programs will continue this year: the Monday (early evening) open house sessions for prospective members and the players' clinics headed by Patrick Duffy. The latter is for helping members improve specific aspects of their game.

Many talented players joined the New York Lawn Bowling club last year. We look forward to more membership growth in 2010.

Our membership remains static yet enthusiantic about the game of bowls. The tri-weekly morning sessions are well attended and our annual mid-August tournament with the Buck Hill Falls Club had our entire membership participating in many well-played matches.

NED tournament bowlers

June 11th, 2009

Jack Lucey, tournament director for men, indicates that we are getting a little lax about enforcing a long-standing Northeast Division rule: entries close one week before the event. This rule gives the tournament director time to plan the format, the prizes, etc. All fees must be received by the director at least one week before the tournament starts. This means that eligibility to play in a pairs tournament will depend on receiving fees from both players by the deadline. If an additional team is needed after the deadline to make the draw even, the tournament director has the discretion to accept one more team.

Jack acknowledges all entries, by e-mail, letter, or telephone, so entrants know when their entry and fees have been received. If you have a question about your entry, contact him at jacklucey@comcast.net. Firm enforcement of the rule begins with the Miller Pairs on June 27-28 in Bloomfield NJ. This tournament, along with the singles playdowns, are both hosted by the Essex club:

June 27-28 Miller Pairs
Essex LBC, Bloomfield, NJ
Deadline for entry: June 20th
July 11-13 Singles Playdowns (Men & Women)
Essex LBC, Bloomfield, NJ
Deadline for entry: July 4th

For these two events, many bowlers will be staying at the Howard Johnson Inn, 680 Route 3 West, Clifton NJ. The telephone number there is 973-471-3800.

Classic Singles Tournament

May 16th - 17th, 2009

The NED season kicked off with the traditional singles tournament. The weather was drizzly and gray, but the bowlers were brisk and clad in whites. Twenty-four bowlers met to do battle on the lush greens of DuPont Country Club in Wilmington Delaware. Along with many old friends, a spattering of new faces added to the enjoyment of the weekend.

Some things were different this year; Jack Lucey ran the tournaments. Nearly one third of the competitors were of the gentler gender, and two of those ladies played late into the day in the playoffs for second place. One player had to withdraw; Patrick Duffy was called off the greens after one game, to attend to the birth of his son Aiden.

Thanks to all who helped with the task of installing the backboards to create a bowling green. The engineering of the spring stopped back boards, and the imagined ditch is an amazing thing to witness, a testament to the innovation of player in the great Northeast Division.

One of those new faces came away a big winner. Ann Wuest, of Willimsburg, won the 50/50 raffle for $83.00, the other 50% of the money goes into the fund to support the Division's US Championship representatives.

Hope to see more new faces at the next tournament in Williamsburg.
